Description
Taenia solium is a cestode (tapeworm) responsible for taeniasis and, more seriously, cysticercosis in humans. Infection occurs through ingestion of undercooked pork containing larval cysts (causing intestinal taeniasis) or by ingestion of eggs shed in human feces, which can lead to cysticercosis when larvae invade tissues such as muscle, subcutaneous tissue, or the central nervous system.
This serologic assay detects IgG antibodies specific to Taenia solium in human serum. Detection of IgG antibodies indicates exposure to the parasite and may be used to support the diagnosis of cysticercosis. When used alongside clinical evaluation and imaging studies, IgG serology aids in confirming infection, monitoring treatment efficacy, and identifying potential recurrence or progression.
