Houttuynia cordata (commonly called chameleon plant) is a culinary and medicinal plant known for its distinct aroma and colorful leaves. It is known as “yu xing cao” in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which refers to its fish-like odor when crushed, and “Dokudami” (毒溜まり) in Japanese which can be translated as “toxin remover” or “detoxifying herb” in English.
Constituents include volatile oils such as alpha-pinene, d-limonene, citronellol, carvacrol, and thymol; flavonoids such as quercetin, quercitrin, isoquercitrin, and rutin; organic acids such as chlorogenic acid, palmitic acid, and linoleic acid; phytosterols such as stigmasterol and beta-sitosterol; and water-soluble polysaccharides.
Houttuynia cordata also contains houttuynoside A and houttuynamide A, in addition to amino acids, vitamins, and trace minerals.
