Description

Echinococcus granulosus is a parasitic tapeworm that causes cystic echinococcosis (hydatid disease) in humans. Infection occurs when humans accidentally ingest eggs shed in the feces of definitive hosts, typically dogs and other canids. The ingested eggs develop into larval cysts, most commonly in the liver and lungs, which can lead to organ dysfunction or complications depending on cyst size and location.

This serologic assay detects IgG antibodies specific to Echinococcus granulosus in human serum. The presence of IgG antibodies indicates exposure to the parasite and may be used to support the diagnosis of cystic echinococcosis. Combined with imaging studies, serologic results help assess infection status, monitor treatment response, and detect potential recurrence.
