THE PROFESSOR
Professor Vassilis P. Papageorgiou, now an Emeritus Professor, held distinguished roles as the Head of the Chemical Engineering Department and the Dean of the School of Engineering at AUTh.
Pioneering since 1980, Professor V.P. Papageorgiou established isohexenylnaphthazarins as potent pharmaceutical substances with a broad spectrum of activity.
He is listed Stanford/Elsevier’s Top 2% Scientist Rankings for 2022 and 2023. This prestigious list, now in its sixth iteration, highlights the world’s leading researchers, representing approximately 2% of all scientists worldwide. It encompasses standardised data on citations, h-index, and a range of bibliometric indicators.
In 2001, he was honoured by the General Secretariat for Research and Technology, Ministry of Development, and the Industrial Property Organization (OBI) for discovering chemical compounds—alkannins and shikonins—that serve as wound-healing and regenerating agents for human and animal tissues.
Based on this discovery, Professor V.P. Papageorgiou developed three pharmaceutical formulations approved by the National Organization for Medicines: Histoplastin Red® (Chopri, S.A.), HELIXDERM® (PNG Gerolymatos), and Epouloderm® Farmalex S.A.), the first and only naturally derived medicines to be discovered and developed in modern-day Greece.
