Description

HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) is a blood test that provides an indication of average blood glucose levels over the previous 2–3 months.

Glucose in the bloodstream naturally attaches to haemoglobin in red blood cells. The HbA1c test measures the percentage of haemoglobin that has glucose attached to it. Unlike a single glucose measurement, HbA1c provides a longer-term picture of blood glucose regulation.

HbA1c is commonly used to assess blood glucose control and to help identify prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. It may also be used to monitor glucose control in people who have already been diagnosed with diabetes.

Testing for Fasting Plasma Glucose is also available
